The Introduction of Chimei Philharmonic Orchestra
About the Orchestra
It has been the long-time ideal of Mr. Wen-Lung Hsu, the founder of CHIMEI Enterprise, to promote the appreciation and comprehension of classical music among the general public in Taiwan. Hence, CHIMEI has founded a number of classical music ensembles over the years, including Tainan Opera Orchestra, Chimei Mandolin Orchestra, and Chimei Symphony Orchestra.
Established in 2003, Chimei Symphony Orchestra had appeared in concert halls throughout Taiwan and outside of the island. With regular tours every year, the orchestra had accomplished impressive achievements. As a result, CHIMEI, in 2007, decided to reorganize the orchestra and held an audition in search of new professional musicians for further cultivation and progression. It was renamed Chimei Philharmonic Orchestra with Mr. Ching-Ming Lu as the Music Director, symbolizing a new milestone of CHIMEI’s dedication and devotion to the music and art scenes in Taiwan.
Since the 90’s of the last century, Chimei Culture Foundation has become one of the world’s leading collectors of string instruments, whether in terms of quantity, quality or breadth of scope. CHIMEI’s marvelous collection, starring masterpieces made by the greatest luthiers in history such as Stradivari, Guarneri del Gesu, Amati, Maggini, just to name a few, is not only for the museum exhibition, but also the educational mission, to bring the beautiful sounds of the legendary violins, violas and cellos in front of as many people as possible. Thus, the foundation has for many years been loaning the instruments, free of charge, to renowned musicians and talented youngsters for uses of concerts or appearances in competitions, as well as been releasing classical music albums and DVDs featured by the collection. The string section of Chimei Philharmonic Orchestra is also accentuated by the rare instruments, a system nowhere to be found except Chimei, one of the key factors that separates the orchestra from others on the planet.
